When you go shopping for a new ceiling fan, most people focus on the aesthetics and price. What’s the nicest looking ceiling fan I can get in my price range and will it match my motif.
There are, however, other very important points to consider before selecting your new ceiling fan. The first thing to determine before you choose a ceiling fan is which size fan blades do you need to match the size of the room where the fan will hang. Keep in mind that fan blade spans can range anywhere from 24 to 80 inches across. Fifty-two inches is the most popular size.
An appropriate size fan for rooms up to 75 square feet would be between 29 and 36 inches. For rooms between 75 and 144 square feet, choose a fan between 36 and 42 inches. If your room is between 144 and 225 square feet, it’s best to choose a fan between 44 and 50 inches. Ceiling fans with blades between 50 and 54 inches are great for rooms 225 to 400 square feet. Extra large ceiling fans are also available for great rooms and rooms with high vaulted ceilings. Those fans come with blade spans between 60 and 80 inches.
Then decide how you want to control the ceiling fan. Do you want to use a pull-chain, remote control, or wall switch? Check to make sure that the control options you want are available on the model you choose.
